A Social Media's Mass Manipulation Technique That Happened on New Year's Eve

1 January 2026

I know this is the first day of the year and I think most people end up writing or telling how their 31st night was or how their first day of the year is but as usual, New Year's Eve is just another day in my life with not much significance.

I'm not a guy who believes in resolutions nor feel anything special about New Year, to me it's just another day in life. My day has been just going out eating some Chicken Mandi alone in a restaurant and playing some L.A. Noire, solving some crimes and then just going to the gym and coming back.

I happened to call a friend while I was heading back to my room to have a chat with her to know how her New Year's went.

We were talking about random stuff, joking, teasing and then she suddenly brought up a topic on how she searched for grapes like crazy yesterday and couldn't find any places selling them in the city as they were all out of stock everywhere.

She then explained the reason saying that she came across this viral trend on Instagram that took over the app in a day. Apparently there's some Spanish tradition saying that if you sit under the table during the midnight of December 31st and eat 12 grapes, all of your wishes will 100% become true.

She even told that all of her friends were also looking for grapes and even those delivery apps ran out of grapes everywhere.

Apparently some people somehow managed to convince the entire world/country to buy all of the grapes in the market with some superstitious story on Instagram. How crazy is that?

I've been living off grid from major social media giants like Instagram and Facebook for more than a year now and I noticed how people seem to be using some kind of emojis or new slangs once every 2 months. I notice this to be consistent across the internet. Suddenly everyone changes their entire way of texting people all of a sudden.

The only good conclusion I can draw from this is that social media platforms have become so powerful that a few people with a handful of bots can spin up trends in a few hours and make the whole world believe something or even influence the way people behave and chat with others.
